C.E. Bartlett introduces the Portable Medical Isolation Unit (PMIU).

This unit is designed to transport patients who may have or are suspected of having infectious conditions such as SARS or in the event of an influenza pandemic (Bird Flu virus). The unit isolates the patient while still allowing medical treatment to be administered without the threat of human to human contamination.

The PMIU is fitted with three pairs of polyurethane sleeves with rigid cuffs suitable for mounting a variety of glove types, allowing patients to receive medical attention while in the unit. There is also provision for up to six medical or catheter lines eg IV drip or oxygen.

The PMIU fits into this compact carry case for trouble-free transportation. The standard unit weighs 22kgs



Foot end, contains air blower/filter


Head end, contains 3 inlet filters

The suction fan sucks air from the PMIU via the suction filters. Air entering the filters has any contaminates removed. The fan then expels the clean air through the diffuser. The PMIU is at “negative pressure”.

The negative pressure inside the PMIU draws replacement air in through the inlet filters above the patients head. Approximately 190 litres of air is sucked through the PMIU each minute.

Each PMIU features:

  • Pole supported airtight enclosure with HEPA filtered airflow
  • Heavy duty base fabric
  • 4 pairs “seatbelts” external tie downs
  • 1 patient restraint “seatbelt”
  • 0.5mm clear PVC canopy
  • Roomy pass through pocket with air airtight zips both sides
  • Airtight zips at head and foot
  • 3 pairs of polyurethane sleeves with rigid cuffs suitable for mounting a variety of glove types
  • Provision for up to 6 medical or catheter lines
  • Pocket for digital thermometer / hydrometer
  • Internal storage pouch

Each PMIU is shipped with these items already assembled:

  • 4 fibreglass hoops
  • 5 O-Rings
  • 5 filters
  • Blower with battery
  • Adaptor, fittings rubber washers and hoses
  • Sleeve cuffs fitted but not taped

Packed with the PMIU are:

  • Valise (containing all)
  • 5 spare filters
  • 7 spare O-Rings
  • Battery charger
  • 2 flow test tubes (1 white ball, 1 black ball)
  • Manual for blower
  • Spare battery for blower
  • Self inflating Mattress 1800 x 510 x 50mm
  • Pole bag containing 3 Aluminium poles plus 1 IV pole
